Why a Website Redesign Cannot Solve a Messaging Problem
When a Design Problem Wears the Face of a Story Problem
Good design is real work, and it earns its place. A skilled designer can guide the eye, establish trust in the first three seconds, and make a complex offering feel navigable instead of overwhelming. None of that is decoration. When the underlying story is clear, design gives it a body the reader can move through. The confusion begins when an organization asks design to do the story’s job. A redesign can present a message beautifully. It cannot decide what the message should say. New fonts, a new tagline, a new channel, these move the furniture around a room whose foundation has not been examined. The space looks different. The structure holding it up has not changed.Narrative confusion disguises itself precisely here. An unclarified story shows up as a website that feels off, so the organization treats the symptom that is easiest to see. Visual redesign feels concrete and finishable in a way that narrative work does not, which makes it the tempting first move even when it addresses the surface rather than the source. What Must Become Clear Before a Designer Is Hired
Narrative coherence means the outward message matches the inner mission, and that coherence has to exist before anyone chooses a color. A designer given a muddled story will produce a beautiful container for a muddle. The clarity has to be brought to the work, not extracted from it.Five things should be settled first. The problem the organization exists to address, named plainly enough that a stranger could repeat it.The people it serves, described as they actually are rather than as a demographic abstraction. The change it seeks in the world, stated as a difference someone would notice. The evidence it can honestly offer, drawn from what the organization has genuinely done. The choices it has made, including the paths it has declined, because a story defined only by what it embraces has no edges. An organization that can answer these five with confidence has a message worth designing around. An organization that cannot will find that no visual treatment rescues a sentence that was never written.Where the Work Actually Lives
Integrated marketing asks the channels to sing in the same key, and self-reflection in marketing asks the whole staff to hear the key in which they are actually singing. Both depend on a narrative already discovered. Coherence across a website, an email, and a printed appeal is only possible once there is something coherent to carry.Narrative is the infrastructure beneath every channel, and infrastructure is not the thing a visitor sees first. It is the reason what they see holds together. A redesign built on a clear story compounds the clarity. A redesign that fails to provide clarity will keep sending the organization back to the same table, wondering why the new site feels as quiet as the old one.The site was never the question. The story underneath it always stood as the real one. This post is grounded in the Space as Metaphor framework, which views space as "metaphor for method, moral orientation, and mode of transformation." The framework helps us understand that our actions are not merely transactional exchanges but choices within complex spaces requiring careful cultivation and ethical stewardship.
About Spaciology
Spaciology is not abstract theory; rather, it is a practice you can feel.
- Inside: Pause, breathe, notice.
- Outside: Design rooms, rituals, and agendas that slow the spin and invite care.
- Between us: Make dialogue a place where different truths can live together long enough to teach something.
Ultimately, leadership is the art of making space for what is important (for everyone) and letting that clarity shape the next step. When we change the spaces from which we lead, our strategies change with them.
